Singapore Airlines has officially rolled out its blockchain-based loyalty program which will reward its regular customers with digital tokens.

This so-called KrisFlyer program is made possible with Singapore Airlines’ tie-up with KrisPay, a digital wallet developed in partnership with KPMG and Microsoft.

“By creating a miles-based digital wallet which integrates the use of miles into their daily lives, KrisFlyer members have yet another way to use miles instantly on everyday transactions,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr. Goh Choon Phong.

Customers who sign up with the program will be able to download a mobile-based application. After registering with the app, passengers can now have their traveled miles converted into digital units of payment which will be stored in their KrisPay wallet.

Points earned can be used with partner merchants based in the southeast Asian country.

The company said it currently has 18 partners where passengers can use their virtual tokens for shopping. This includes eateries, beauty parlors, gas stations and some retailers, including the nation’s LEGO store outlets.

Plans to do the upgrade has been revealed as early as February when the airline operator is touted as the best airline in the world, winning the World Airline Awards by Skytrax in London. This year, SIA outpaced Qatar Airlines, the 2017 winner.
